Rare Hare Spirits has introduced its latest ultra-premium whisky, “The Tempest,” sourced from Tasmania. This limited edition single malt is part of Rare Hare’s exclusive collection of whiskies from around the globe, and it highlights Tasmania’s emergence as a noteworthy producer of single malt whiskies.
Tasmania, an island situated south of mainland Australia, has a rich yet relatively unknown history of whisky production, which was halted by local prohibition laws from 1830 until the 1990s. The ban was lifted thanks to the efforts of a scotch-loving land surveyor, and since then, the island’s whisky production has resumed and gained international acclaim. Rare Hare’s collaboration with Hellyers Road Distillery, Tasmania’s pioneer in whisky making post-prohibition, marks this release as significant. Hellyers Road is recognized as one of Australia’s oldest and most respected distilleries, only recently making its aged expressions available.
“The Tempest” is inspired by Shakespeare’s story, reflecting the natural forces and rejuvenation themes in its creation. Distilled using traditional methods that include a centuries-old pot still process followed by a secondary slow distillation, this whisky promises exceptional quality and character. The water used in production travels from Antarctica, lending a unique purity ideal for whisky making. The local malt and barley benefit from Tasmania’s rich soils and distinct climate.
Aged for seventeen years in standard-sized bourbon casks and then for an additional three years in port casks, “The Tempest” offers a complex flavor profile. Tasting notes include biscotti, vanilla nougat, elderflower, and citrus marmalade, with hints of ginger, apricots, and a velvety citrus finish. This blend of flavors makes “The Tempest” a must-try for whisky enthusiasts.
Priced at $999, “The Tempest” is available for purchase online at Rare Hare Spirits’ website and at select fine spirit retailers nationwide. Alex Moore, Master Blender at Rare Hare, describes it as a significant addition to any serious whiskey collector’s repertoire, celebrating the unique Tasmanian terroir.
