Spin Master Corp., a leading global children’s entertainment company, has announced plans to distribute Punirunes, a squishy digital pet popular within Japanese anime culture. Originally launched by Japanese toy company Takara Tomy in 2021, Spin Master aims to bring Punirunes to more global markets due to growing interest in anime culture.
Punirunes features a full color, backlit LCD screen displaying 55 characters and rare characters to collect in each pod. Users can interact with the pet by placing their finger inside a squishy dome, which is mirrored on the screen, allowing them to pet, feed, play games, clean, customize, and nurture their digital pet. The combination of digital pet care with tactile play sets Punirunes apart from traditional digital pets.
Since its initial release, Takara Tomy has sold over 700,000 units of Punirunes across Japan, Korea, Taiwan, Hong Kong, and Macau. The rising global popularity of Japanese anime culture and the success of Punirunes prompted Spin Master to collaborate with Takara Tomy to expand its availability. The Toy Association has identified “AniMania” as a top toy trend for 2024, indicating a significant impact on the toy industry and further supporting the decision to distribute Punirunes more widely.
Doug Wadleigh, Spin Master’s President of Toys, emphasized the unique appeal of Punirunes, noting its blend of digital interaction and tactile engagement. With its proven success in Asia and the increasing demand for anime-inspired toys, Spin Master anticipates Punirunes will be well-received by both children and adults worldwide.
Punirunes will be available at a suggested retail price of $39.99 USD / $49.99 CAD starting August 2024 at major retailers.
