June 27th marks National Bomb Pop Day, celebrating the 69th birthday of the iconic red, white, and blue rocket-shaped treat. Created in 1955, Bomb Pop symbolizes American patriotism and has become a timeless summer staple for over six decades. The range has expanded to include three Extreme flavors: Super Sour Strawberry, Blue Raspberry Freeze, and Fire Cherry, catering to diverse tastes. This summer, Bomb Pop’s color-changing soda is also available at IHOPs nationwide.
Bomb Pop Brand Manager Alnese Thomas stated that Bomb Pop represents exploration and fun, and the Extreme flavors offer a unique taste experience. The brand remains innovative while staying true to the classic Original Bomb Pop.
The Original Bomb Pop was invented in 1955 by D.S. “Doc” Abernathy and James S. Merritt for Merritt Foods in Kansas City, Missouri. The treat features a red, white, and blue stack infused with cherry, lime, and blue raspberry, reflecting the patriotic spirit of the times. In 1971, Bomb Pop was trademarked. When Merritt Foods closed in 1991, Wells’ Dairy, now Wells Enterprises, acquired the business, including Bomb Pops. Today, Bomb Pops are still produced in Le Mars, Iowa, where Wells Enterprises, America’s largest privately held ice cream company, is headquartered.
As Bomb Pop celebrates its 69th birthday, the brand encourages everyone to enjoy its 40-calorie frozen treat and continue the celebrations throughout the summer.
