LG Display, a leading innovator in display technologies, has announced that its OLED TV panels are beneficial for maintaining healthy sleep patterns. This conclusion follows a clinical study conducted in partnership with researchers from Kookmin University in Seoul. The study measured the sleep-inducing hormone melatonin in 40 adults over two weeks, comparing the effects of watching content on LCD versus OLED TVs.
The study found that melatonin secretion decreased by 2.7% in participants watching LCD TVs but increased by 8.1% in those watching OLED TVs. Melatonin is essential for preparing the body for sleep, and blue light from displays can disrupt its production, potentially leading to sleep disorders.
LG Display’s OLED panels emit only 36% blue light, compared to 70-80% from LCD panels, due to the absence of a backlight. This reduction in blue light minimizes the negative impact on melatonin secretion and supports healthier sleep patterns by better activating the parasympathetic nerves, which promote feelings of comfort.
These findings reinforce previous acknowledgments of the health benefits of LG Display’s OLED panels. Last year, the company’s OLED TV and monitor panels were the first in the industry to receive “Circadian Friendly” certification from TÜV Rheinland, a global testing and certification body. Additionally, OLED panels have the lowest blue light emissions among TV panels and are free from screen flicker, which can cause vision loss. These features have earned them the “Eyesafe” certification from Eyesafe, in association with TÜV Rheinland, as well as “Flicker Free” and “Discomfort Glare Free” verifications from UL, a global safety science company.
Soo-young Yoon, CTO and Executive Vice President at LG Display, stated that the company aims to introduce products and technologies that offer differentiated value to customers, focusing on safety and superior image quality.
