The 2024 Meals on Wheels Annual Conference was held this week in Baltimore, Maryland, bringing together over 700 local leaders, industry experts, and national partners to commemorate the 50th anniversary of Meals on Wheels America. The event marked the first national gathering of senior nutrition programs, which began in 1974 in Washington, D.C., leading to the formation of what is now Meals on Wheels America.
The conference featured a series of keynote addresses, educational sessions, and a Meals on Wheels Expo aimed at enhancing local program capacity and expanding services to meet current and future needs. The event also saw the introduction of Meals on Wheels America’s new strategic plan, titled “End the Wait,” which focuses on eliminating waitlists and ensuring that all seniors who require services receive them.
Ellie Hollander, President and CEO of Meals on Wheels America, highlighted the ongoing challenges faced by seniors, emphasizing the organization’s commitment to addressing underfunded and overlooked needs. Hollander underscored the importance of collective action in eliminating waitlists and providing nutritious meals and social connections to seniors across the country.
Special guest Jeff Ross, a writer, actor, comedian, and supporter of Meals on Wheels, attended the evening celebration on August 14, where he helped commemorate the achievements of the organization over the past 50 years. The event also included an awards ceremony recognizing individuals and organizations that have significantly contributed to the Meals on Wheels movement.
Awards presented included The Sister Alice Marie Quinn Award to J. Greg Pittman, CEO of Meals on Wheels Texoma, for his leadership in combating senior isolation and hunger. Jo Ann Jenkins, CEO of AARP, received The Extra Mile Award for her efforts to promote the well-being and independence of older adults. The Home Depot Foundation was honored with The Driving Force Award for its partnership with Meals on Wheels America in supporting homebound seniors.

The 2025 Meals on Wheels Annual Conference and Expo is scheduled to take place from August 25-28 at the Marriott San Antonio Rivercenter in San Antonio, Texas.
