Herman Miller Gaming has announced a new collaboration with Brooklyn-based artists FAILE, consisting of Patrick McNeil and Patrick Miller. This partnership draws inspiration from FAILE’s immersive Deluxx Fluxx experience, which combines elements of arcade games, music, nightlife, and original artwork. The collection aims to celebrate play and craftsmanship through various colorful works.
The collection includes unique interpretations of the Herman Miller Embody Gaming Chairs, hand-carved wood “Joysticks,” and print editions specifically designed for Herman Miller Gaming. An art installation showcasing these pieces will take place in New York later this month, with the Joysticks and prints available for purchase starting October 1, 2024.
Jon Campbell, Vice President and General Manager of Herman Miller Gaming, remarked on the shared values of creativity and self-expression between FAILE and Herman Miller. He emphasized that FAILE’s cultural influence is significant, and this collaboration aims to reflect their unique perspective within the gaming community.
FAILE has designed twelve one-of-a-kind Embody Gaming Chairs that celebrate the chair’s design as a canvas for artistic expression. These chairs feature bold and vibrant designs, enhancing their identity as both functional and artistic objects. After a series of launch events, these chairs will be added to Herman Miller Gaming’s archives, serving as inspiration for future designers.
In addition to the chairs, FAILE has produced 100 unique hand-carved wooden sculptures, called “Joysticks,” which are painted and designed to embody whimsical game-like characters. McNeil and Miller noted that the Joysticks draw inspiration from their creative process, which often includes character sketches. They aimed to create objects that possess individuality and can serve as distinct decor in homes.
Furthermore, FAILE has developed three prints reflecting the themes of gaming and arcades, utilizing imagery from Deluxx Fluxx that has not been previously released. These graphic artworks are designed to enhance the aesthetics of any gaming space.
