One in four U.S. households includes someone with a mobility disability, yet everyday kitchen tasks often remain out of reach. Today, Whirlpool unveiled the Spin&Load Rack—a 360-degree spinning lower dishwasher rack designed to make loading and unloading dishes effortless for everyone. Developed in partnership with the United Spinal Association and refined through feedback from Whirlpool’s AVID employee resource group and Corewell Health, this retrofit rack fits all 24-inch Whirlpool dishwashers made since 2018.
The Spin&Load Rack rotates smoothly on its track, allowing users to bring every corner of the lower rack within easy reach. Its hover-clip packaging even features a one-hand pull tab, ensuring that opening and setup are just as inclusive. “The Spin&Load Rack is a great example of Whirlpool’s commitment to human-centered innovation and inclusive design,” says April Taylor, Associate Brand Manager at Whirlpool. “We want to empower all families to tackle chores without barriers.”
Initial concepts emerged from an AVID-hosted innovation challenge. Engineers then created prototypes that members of the United Spinal Association rigorously tested, sharing insights that shaped the final design. “Including voices from the disability community at every stage was essential,” explains Whirlpool engineer Katelin Frayer. “Their feedback ensured the rack truly meets users’ needs.”
To amplify its impact, Whirlpool has partnered with Tony Award–winner Ali Stroker, the first wheelchair user on a Broadway stage. “I’ve often had to adapt to environments around me,” Stroker notes. “It feels good knowing Whirlpool has created something that empowers families and simplifies dish duty.”
The Spin&Load Rack is available now at participating dealers and online. As Whirlpool continues to champion inclusive design, this rack stands as a new benchmark in accessible kitchen innovation.
