Garmin has added a Google Maps application to the Connect IQ Store, making turn-by-turn directions available on selected Venu, Forerunner, vívoactive, and Fenix smartwatches. Once a destination is entered on an Android phone, route instructions are forwarded to the paired watch, which then displays and vibrates each upcoming maneuver during walking, running, or cycling trips. Users can also open the app on the watch to view the next three turns in advance.

The company notes that the on-wrist prompts allow pedestrians to keep their phones in a pocket while crossing streets or navigating crowded areas. Runners and cyclists can continue recording distance, heart rate, and other metrics on the watch while receiving navigation cues. Completed activities can be synchronized from Garmin Connect to third-party Android fitness platforms through Health Connect integration.

Garmin Vice President of Consumer Sales and Marketing Susan Lyman said the addition is intended to let customers maintain a hands-free approach to navigation during everyday and recreational movement. The Google Maps app is available at no cost and requires a compatible Garmin watch paired with an Android smartphone.
