Sony Electronics has released a new wide-angle zoom lens, FE 16-35mm F2.8 GM II, intended for 35mm full-frame E-mount cameras. The lens covers a focal length range of 16-35mm with a constant maximum aperture of F2.8. Designed to meet the needs of both photographers and videographers, the lens features high-speed autofocus (AF) unique to the G Master series. The FE 16-35mm F2.8 GM II lens is part of a second-generation zoom lens series that includes a standard 24-70mm and a telephoto 70-200mm lens.
The FE 16-35mm F2.8 GM II lens has a new optical design that incorporates an extremely high surface precision XA (extreme aspherical) lens. This lens is capable of high-resolution performance across the entire zoom range. Sony’s Nano AR Coating II minimizes ghosting and flares. The lens is notably the world’s smallest and lightest in its category, with a length of 111.5mm and a weight of approximately 547g.
The lens employs XD (extreme dynamic) linear motors that ensure a quiet and fast AF suitable for still images and movies. The lens also allows for high-speed continuous shooting of up to 30 fps when used with the Alpha 1 camera body.
For improved operability, the lens features an aperture ring that can be clicked on or off and two focus hold buttons that can be customized. Additional features include a fluorine coating on the front lens for easy dirt removal and a dustproof and splash-resistant design.
The FE 16-35mm F2.8 GM II is set to be available in Fall 2023 through Sony authorized dealers. The lens is priced at approximately $2,299.99 USD and $3,099.99 CAN.
