The LEGO Group has announced its inaugural build set inspired by the Dune universe, specifically based on Denis Villeneuve’s film adaptation of Frank Herbert’s science fiction novel. Named the LEGO Icons Dune Atreides Royal Ornithopter, the set aims to replicate the iconic aircraft from the Dune series in LEGO form.
The set consists of 1,369 pieces and allows fans to construct an Ornithopter with a dragonfly-inspired design. The aircraft features functional blades capable of flapping and retracting through a 180-degree rotation. The dimensions of the completed Ornithopter are 9 inches high, 22 inches long, and 31 inches wide. It also includes a foldable landing gear for added realism.
In addition to the Ornithopter, the set comes with eight new LEGO Minifigures representing key characters from the Dune universe. These include Paul Atreides, Lady Jessica, Gurney Halleck, Chani, Leto Atreides, Liet Kynes, Duncan Idaho, and Baron Harkonnen.
The LEGO Icons Dune Atreides Royal Ornithopter serves as both a toy and a display piece. It is designed to appeal to fans of Frank Herbert’s original novels as well as those who enjoyed Denis Villeneuve’s film adaptation. The release of this LEGO set coincides with the upcoming Dune: Part Two, which is scheduled to be in cinemas from March 15, 2024.
Michael Psiaki, Design Master at the LEGO Group, expressed the company’s enthusiasm for the project, stating that the set allows builders to recreate the Ornithopter with impressive detail. Amber Sheppo, Vice President of Consumer Products and Partnerships at Legendary Entertainment, also shared her excitement about the collaboration, highlighting the alignment between the creative design of the product and the spirit of both the Dune and LEGO brands.
The LEGO Icons Dune Atreides Royal Ornithopter is available for pre-order starting October 24 and will be officially on sale from February 1, 2024. The set is priced at 164.99 USD/EUR and 149.99 GBP. It is part of the LEGO Sets for Adults range, which aims to offer adults immersive building experiences that can also serve as display pieces.
