This event coincides with the release of the annual eBay Recommerce Report, which is now in its fourth year. The report traditionally measures insights and motivations of eBay sellers and buyers regarding pre-loved shopping. This year, it provides a broader understanding of recommerce trends and sentiment at a global consumer level, surveying over 28,000 people worldwide.
Recommerce Day will feature a homepage takeover on eBay, providing opportunities to learn about recommerce, find pre-loved deals, and participate in an eBay Live program featuring exclusively pre-loved items. Starting at 9 AM PT, participants can win refurbished prizes during the live stream.
eBay has partnered with award-winning actor and sustainability advocate Alicia Silverstone to highlight the benefits of recommerce. Silverstone, known for her environmental advocacy, expressed her enthusiasm for the circular economy and pre-loved shopping. She emphasized that recommerce contributes to a more sustainable lifestyle by reducing waste.
eBay CEO Jamie Iannone stated that eBay has been a significant force in promoting recommerce and continues to invest in tools and technology to support the circular economy. He highlighted that eBay’s Recommerce Day aims to raise awareness about the benefits of sustainable shopping.
The 2024 Recommerce Report, set to be released on May 21, 2024, indicates a growing trend towards pre-loved shopping. According to the survey, 59% of global consumers bought pre-loved goods in the last year, and over 70% plan to do so this year. The report also shows that younger generations, particularly those aged 18-24, are increasingly turning to pre-loved shopping for unique items and better value.
Additionally, a resolution was introduced in the California State Legislature by State Senator Dave Cortese and in the city of San Jose, CA, to recognize May 21 as Recommerce Day. These resolutions aim to increase interest in pre-loved shopping and promote sustainable practices.
