Delamain Cognac has announced the addition of an exclusive Grande Champagne cognac, L’Oiseau Rare, to its permanent range. This hors d’âge cognac is being introduced as part of the House’s bicentenary celebrations and represents the culmination of Delamain’s 200-year history and expertise in cognac production, particularly with the Grande Champagne terroir.
L’Oiseau Rare is a blend of eaux-de-vie that were carefully selected twice: first for their individual qualities, where they were aged to develop their unique characteristics, and then again to be blended and aged together for several decades in a specially crafted oak vat known as a “foudre.” This century-old vat, located in the Grand Chai in Jarnac, enhances the concentration of aromas and creates a harmonious blend.
Charles Braastad, Delamain’s Cellar Master, commented on the new addition, noting that the blend was created by Dominique Touteau, Delamain’s former Cellar Master, marking the peak of his 40-year career. Braastad emphasized the exceptional qualities of the eaux-de-vie and the intricate blending process that brings them together. He expressed his privilege in continuing Touteau’s legacy and launching this exceptional cognac during Delamain’s bicentenary year.
The name L’Oiseau Rare pays homage to Jacques Delamain, a cognac visionary and ornithologist who contributed significantly to the House’s philosophy of blending a passion for the natural world with the creation of exceptional cognacs. Jacques Delamain’s influence, particularly through his scholarly work and his role in co-creating the iconic X.O Pale & Dry, remains a cornerstone of the family’s approach to cognac production.
The packaging of L’Oiseau Rare features a unique decanter showcasing various bird species, including a gold-highlighted kestrel native to the Charente region, as depicted in Delamain’s book “Portraits d’Oiseaux.” The sandblasted decanter includes a gold-colored metal collar and a glass stopper, all housed in an oak wood gift box with walnut and birch wood accents, reflecting the cognac’s naturalist inspiration.
L’Oiseau Rare offers a complex and ethereal tasting experience, with aromas of flowers, spice, ripe summer fruits, roasted almonds, and other nuts. The palate features flavors of orange zest, red fruits, Kirsch cherries, and Muscat grapes, complemented by cardamom. The cognac’s persistence, length, and elegance are characteristic of the Delamain style, which has been passed down through generations for over 200 years.
L’Oiseau Rare will be launched in July 2024, coinciding with Delamain’s bicentenary celebrations. It will be available in selected premises and travel retail stores worldwide, with an expected retail price of €1,500.
