July 2025 marks the 50th anniversary of the modern service dog, and Eukanuba is celebrating by deepening its partnership with Canine Companions, the nation’s first and largest service dog provider. The collaboration, now in its 30th year, ensures that every puppy and working dog in Canine Companions’ program receives tailored, premium nutrition designed to support rigorous training and long-term health.
Canine Companions began in 1975 when it trained Abdul, the first service dog for an individual with a physical disability. Since then, more than 8,300 service dogs have been placed with children, adults and veterans facing challenges ranging from mobility impairments to post-traumatic stress. The nonprofit supplies these dogs at no cost to recipients, though demand remains high—hundreds are still on the waitlist for a specially trained companion.
Eukanuba’s role extends beyond sponsorship; the brand develops its formulas in consultation with veterinarians to address the unique physical and mental demands placed on service dogs. Jason Taylor, vice president at Eukanuba, said the partnership reflects a shared commitment to “life-changing bonds” and that the right diet is critical for dogs’ stamina and wellbeing. Canine Companions chief marketing officer Jeanine Konopelski added that reliable, science-based nutrition underpins the organisation’s ability to train dogs for complex tasks.
More than one in four U.S. adults lives with a disability, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and many people rely on service dogs for daily activities—from operating light switches to retrieving items. To mark the anniversary, Canine Companions will hold its National Conference in Santa Rosa, California, from July 18 to 20. The event will feature a keynote address from Royal Canin North America’s vice president of corporate affairs and nutritional workshops led by Eukanuba experts, underscoring the central role of diet in canine performance.
