According to the American Kennel Club, the French Bulldog has been named the most popular dog breed in the United States for the third consecutive year, based on registration statistics. The French Bulldog, known for its adaptability and friendly nature, continues to maintain its status as a favored companion among dog owners.
In contrast, the Cane Corso has shown significant growth in popularity since its recognition by the AKC in 2010. The breed has experienced a 414% increase in registrations over the past decade, moving from the 47th position in 2014 to 14th in 2024. AKC Executive Secretary Gina DiNardo commented on the French Bulldog’s appeal, stating, “The Frenchie has solidified itself as America’s sweetheart, and it’s no surprise why. They are fabulous companions for a variety of people.” She also noted the Cane Corso’s rising status, emphasizing the importance of researching breeds to match them with the right lifestyle.
Other breeds making notable progress in 2024 include the Staffordshire Bull Terrier, which moved from 72nd to 63rd place, and the Chinese Crested, which rose from 79th to 68th. The American Staffordshire Terrier, American Eskimo Dog, Bracco Italiano, and German Pinscher also improved their rankings.
Over the past ten years, several breeds have made significant strides, such as the Boykin Spaniel, which advanced from 108th to 65th, and the Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retriever, which moved from 99th to 69th. Social media favorites like the Pembroke Welsh Corgi, Yorkshire Terrier, Siberian Husky, and Pug also hold notable positions on the popularity list, ranking 15th, 11th, 26th, and 38th respectively. This data reflects the evolving preferences of dog owners across the country.
