Fresh Del Monte Produce Inc. has introduced a new variety of pineapple, the Rubyglow, to the U.S. market following a successful launch in China earlier this year. The Rubyglow pineapple, distinguished by its deep red outer shell and bright yellow flesh, offers a distinct sweet flavor. It was developed over a 15-year period and is now being produced in limited quantities in Costa Rica.
This exclusive variety is part of Fresh Del Monte’s commitment to expanding its range of premium, innovative pineapple offerings. The Rubyglow pineapples are shipped without their crowns in specially designed elegant packaging, emphasizing their status as a luxury product. They are available nationwide through select regional grocers and online from specialty produce retailers, targeting high-end consumers looking for unique and exotic fruit options.
Melissa Mackay, Vice President of Marketing for North America at Fresh Del Monte, highlighted the Rubyglow pineapple as the latest example of the company’s innovation in the pineapple category. She described it as an “exclusive, limited-availability” product that serves as a unique gift or a novel addition to social gatherings.
The development of the Rubyglow involved crossbreeding traditional pineapple varieties with the Morada variety, taking two years to cultivate each fruit. This process, along with a limited seed supply, contributes to the scarcity and exclusivity of the product. Fresh Del Monte has a registered plant patent for the Rubyglow in the United States.
In addition to Rubyglow, Fresh Del Monte offers a variety of pineapple products including the Del Monte Gold Extra Sweet Pineapples, Honeyglow pineapples, Pinkglow pineapples, and Del Monte Zero carbon neutral pineapples, all cultivated under sustainable practices. The company has been at the forefront of pineapple innovation since the 1990s, continually broadening its assortment to cater to diverse consumer preferences.
