Nestlé Purina PetCare, in partnership with The Kenan Advantage Group (KAG) and Nikola Corporation, has launched its first zero-tailpipe-emission delivery using a hydrogen fuel cell electric semi-truck. This inaugural delivery involves transporting Purina products, including Tidy Cats cat litter, across three cities in California: Stockton, Maricopa, and Modesto. This initiative is part of Purina’s broader effort to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in its supply chain.
The hydrogen fuel cell truck, provided by Nikola Corporation, offers a range of up to 500 miles and can be refueled in under 20 minutes, all while producing zero emissions. According to Nikola, each truck can eliminate 97 metric tons of CO2 emissions annually, the equivalent of removing 23 passenger vehicles from the road for a year.
Travis Krous, Purina’s senior director of Supply Chain Operations, highlighted the company’s commitment to sustainability and its goal of testing new technologies to determine their scalability. This regional delivery strategy helps reduce long-distance trucking, further contributing to Purina’s environmental objectives.
KAG, responsible for transporting Purina’s products using the new truck, is dedicated to integrating energy-efficient technologies to optimize its supply chain. Nikola’s president and CEO, Steve Girsky, emphasized that the collaboration is part of their mission to promote innovation and environmental responsibility in transportation.
