PetSmart Charities, a leading funder of animal welfare in the U.S., has announced its 11 millionth pet adoption as part of its 30th anniversary celebration. This milestone comes just ahead of National Adoption Week, taking place from October 21 to 27, where prospective pet parents can meet adoptable animals at local PetSmart stores across the country.
Jon Pepper, a bus driver from Philadelphia, became the 11 millionth pet adopter when he welcomed Sammy, a friendly dog from ACCT Philly, into his family. Pepper had recently lost his chihuahua and wasn’t expecting to adopt so soon, but Sammy’s energetic personality made her stand out at a local adoption event. Sammy now joins Jon and his other dog, Heidi, as part of a growing family.
This milestone reflects the success of PetSmart Charities’ partnerships with local shelters and rescues, which bring adoptable pets to PetSmart locations across the U.S. In recognition of the 11 millionth adoption, Hill’s Pet Nutrition is providing a year’s supply of free pet food to Sammy’s family. Additionally, Pepper has been awarded VIPP (Very Important Pet Parent) status in PetSmart’s Treats Rewards Loyalty Program until the end of 2025.
Heidi Marston, director of pet placement at PetSmart Charities, praised the impact of these partnerships, highlighting the joy that pets like Sammy bring to their new families. The milestone coincides with the continuing need for pet adoptions, as shelters nationwide face overcrowding, with millions of animals still awaiting homes.
During National Adoption Week, PetSmart Charities encourages families to visit their local PetSmart stores to adopt and help reduce overcrowding in shelters. For over 30 years, PetSmart Charities has facilitated in-store adoptions, creating millions of meaningful connections between pets and their families.
