Sony Electronics has introduced the FE 16-25mm F2.8 G (SEL1625G), a new wide-angle zoom lens designed for its α (Alpha) E-mount cameras. This lens, which maintains a constant maximum aperture of F2.8 across its 16 mm to 25 mm zoom range, is noted for being the smallest and lightest F2.8 zoom lens Sony has produced to date. It offers an optimal balance between portability and image quality, making it an ideal choice for various photographic genres such as landscapes, architecture, portraits, and more.
The FE 16-25mm F2.8 G lens features a compact design characteristic of Sony’s G lens series, with a weight of approximately 409g and dimensions that ensure it remains highly portable. It complements the previously announced FE 24-50mm F2.8 G standard zoom lens by sharing similar attributes like filter diameter, aperture, and overall size.
Yang Cheng, Vice President of Imaging Solutions at Sony Electronics Inc., emphasized that the FE 16-25mm F2.8 G was engineered to meet the needs of creators seeking a wide-angle lens that provides both high image quality and a compact form factor. The lens is particularly suited for use with Sony’s compact full-frame camera bodies, such as the Alpha 7C R and Alpha 7C II.
The FE 16-25mm F2.8 G incorporates advanced optical technology, including three Extra-Low Dispersion (ED) elements and four aspherical lenses, to minimize optical aberrations and ensure sharp, high-resolution images across the entire frame. The lens also features an 11-blade circular aperture that enhances its ability to produce smooth bokeh, a hallmark of the G series lenses.
For videographers, the lens offers notable benefits such as high precision autofocus facilitated by two linear motors, which are ideal for capturing fast-moving subjects with clarity. The lens supports high-speed continuous shooting with AF/AE tracking at up to 120 frames per second and is capable of producing smooth focus transitions in high-frame-rate videos, such as 4K120p or FHD240p. Additional video-friendly features include linear response manual focus and compatibility with in-body Active Mode Image Stabilization and Focus Breathing optimization.
Practical features of the FE 16-25mm F2.8 G include a customizable focus hold button, an aperture ring with an ON/OFF switch for click sounds, and a focus mode switch. The design is dust and moisture resistant, with a fluorine coating to prevent dirt from adhering to the lens surface, ensuring durability and reliability in challenging environments.
