In Kentucky’s Bourbon Country, a new lodging option has emerged for visitors interested in the region’s whiskey heritage. Bourbon Barrel Retreats offers accommodations in uniquely designed barrel-shaped cabins, making it the only establishment of its kind in the United States. Located on 50 acres between Bardstown and Lawrenceburg, these cabins provide a distinctive experience for guests.
Each cabin features 300 square feet of space that includes a king-size bed, a kitchenette, and a bathroom. Seven of the nine cabins are equipped with private outdoor hot tubs. The proprietors, Tony and Christina Happeny, have experience in creating unique lodging, having previously developed a glamping site with geodesic domes. The barrel cabins are described as modern-rustic-cozy, with ten-foot ceilings that exceed guest expectations regarding space.
The concept of staying in a bourbon barrel was developed to enhance the visitor experience in this prominent whiskey-producing area. After creating a prototype to ensure functionality and weather resistance, the Happenys found that the idea resonated with visitors, leading to a rapid increase in interest.
Bourbon Barrel Retreats plans to expand its offerings with the opening of a restaurant and whiskey tasting room in summer 2025. This addition will allow guests to enjoy specialized bourbon selections and a custom bourbon release without leaving the premises. The communal firepits have also become a popular gathering spot for guests to share their bourbon experiences.
The retreat’s location is advantageous, being central to 20 distilleries, including notable names such as Buffalo Trace and Woodford Reserve. To assist guests in navigating their options, Bourbon Barrel Retreats provides a complimentary concierge service that creates personalized itineraries for distillery tours, tastings, and meal reservations.
Additionally, the retreat offers a 15 percent discount to active and veteran military members and reduced rates for group bookings. The emphasis remains on delivering a unique lodging experience combined with attentive hospitality.
